Tamiya Avante 4WD 2011

Way back in 1988, which I was around 15 years old, Tamiya released a 4wd RC buggy that was just amazing in every way. Amazing to look at, performed amazingly (in my eyes at the time), and basically ticked every box possible for a teenager. Since its release the Avante has become one of the most Iconic RC cars of the 20th century, and now, just over a decade into the 21st century, it’s back!

The original machine featured a Fiberglass reinforced plastic double deck chassis design, a sophisticated shaft-driven 4wd system and longitudinally mounted motor and battery pack. Now, more than 20 years on from that original release, Tamiya has given the Avante its well honed re-release treatment, resulting in the new Avante 2011.

Tamiya have stayed true to the original design in many ways but have also embraced several upgrades and enhancements to drag the Avante kicking and screaming into the modern era of RC cars. The original layout of the chassis remains, but the original FRP decks have been replaced by carbon fibre ones, plus the front knuckles are now made from aluminium for a much needed increase in strength.

The drive train in this venerable Tamiya beast features very compact gearboxes which are armed with 3 small planetary gears, a center differential plus front and rear universal drive shafts to transfer all the power from the included 25 turn motor to where it’s need most, the track
