If you’ve never tried drifting, you really are missing a great deal of fun and excitement! There’s something about driving sideways… it takes a bit of skill, but with the right set-up and a reasonable sized flat open area to practice on, it doesn’t take long to master some pretty decent maneuvers. The question is though, what setup do you need to get started? Well if you’re a Tamiya nut like me, you have three choices depending on your budget and your penchant for bling!
The TT-01 is one of Tamiya’s most established and most versatile chassis, and the TT-01D is the ideal way to start your drive career. There are a variety of models in the Tamiya range that make use of this chassis such as the 58474 Endless Nissan 370Z. This shaft driven 4 wheel drive model comes with a Sport Tuned RS540 motor, aluminium heat sink, oil filled CVA super mini shock dampers, fully ball raced and a set of front and rear LED lights too. It also comes with a set of hard compound drift tyres sat on a very respectable set of Chrome rims which perform very well on smooth surfaces both in and outdoor.
Billed as the next step up in your drifting career, the Tamiya TB-03D features some pretty cool advancements over the budget TT-01D Type E. The suspension arrangement on the TB-03 has been altered from standard to a standard outboard setup, and the chassis is also equipped with short reversible suspension arms. Nice softly spring damped shocks and dedicated suspension mounts all work together to give you one of the best RC Drifting experiences possible. Supplied in kit form, the TB-03D comes complete with Super Driftech resin tires as well as a set of ultra-cool black metal plated 18-spoke wheels and brake disk shaped wheel hubs for that realistic touch. As a nice bonus, Tamiya also throw in an assortment of Body Accessory Parts to further to pimp your drift machine even further.
If you’re an RC enthusiast that always demands the best, then the limited edition TA05-VDF is the ultimate drift machine, designed from the ground up for top-level drifting action. The Vertical Double Frame (the VDF part of the name) features two strong, 2mm thick carbon plates which help control chassis pitch while allowing a supple roll movement during drifting to keep all four wheels on the ground and you in complete control. Based on Tamiya’s TA-05 proven belt-driven 4WD system, the drive-train features a front ball differential, rear direct coupling, plus Front and Rear universal drive shafts. A parallel geometry steering system with left and right symmetrical steering angles offers the ultimate in precisely controlled steering and counter-steering during drifting.
Supplied with every hop-up and modification you can imagine, the Tamiya TA05 VDF is the top level drift machine!
