The Traxxas Slash has been around for a number of years now in both 2wd and 4wd configurations, with a variety of different body shell designs and colour schemes, but 2012 sees the most radical overhaul of this venerable RC Short Course truck in the form of the F150 Raptor SVT. The C-TRX5806 two wheel drive model sees the tried and tested 2wd Slash chassis being graced with an officially licensed Ford SVT Raptor body shell and graphics and I have to say it’s one of my favourites. The Gun Metal Grey version looks particularly stunning in its simple, single colour livery.

As always, the model comes ready to run with a TQ 2.4Ghz Radio System pre-installed. A powercell 3000mAh 8.4v Nimh battery and a charger. Licensed BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain tyres are responsible for putting the power from the powerful Titan 12T 550 sized motor to the track and the included XL-5 Waterproof electronic speed controller has built in low voltage protection to enable you to run LiPo batteries with the model too.

A brushless-ready Magnum 272 metal gear transmission is also fitted as standard as well as Traxxas’ tried and tested Torque Control slipper clutch system. A quick and robust model straight from the box is what you get here, with speeds of up to 30mph+ using the included optional 23 tooth pinion gear.

Tamiya 58512 VW Camper Wheelie WR-02

Since its release earlier in the summer, my opinion on the Tamiya 58512 VW Camper Wheelie kit has been somewhat divided. Whilst I’m a huge fan of the real thing, Tamiya have perhaps pushed things a little far with this, creating a bit of an oddity maybe. The 58512 VW Camper depicts a 1st-generation, T1 split screen variant of the Volkswagen Camper Van, which was also known as the Volkswagen Bus to many of loyal fans. On first look, the shell looks like a pretty decent representation of the real thing, but on closer inspection, they’ve played around with the geometry of the shell quite a bit, so its usefulness as a scale shell may be somewhat limited.

That said, the new WR-02 chassis is equipped with a wheelie bar to enable exciting, wheels in the air driving action. Which is what the Tamiya WR-02 vehicle are all about!

Tamiya has reproduced this model with a comical appearance to result in this fun-filled model which is fine with me. Whether it will gain the popularity of the Lunch Box over time, who knows. But I recently had the pleasure of building one for myself for my magazine column in RC Racer, and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the chassis build. Once completed, the body shell looks great, but the sheer volume of masking required and the number of window decals that have to be cut out by hand is insane!

Kyosho Sand Master Kit Version

The EZ Build Kit version of the Sand Master is supplied as a self assembly model kit, which has always been the traditional way that hobby grade RC cars were supplied. The advantage of opting for the kit built version being that you get to know your model inside out before you run it, so if things go wrong, you know exactly where to look! You also get to choose which radio system etc you use with the car as well as having the opportunity to customize and fine tune it as you go.

The EZ Built Kit is supplied with some of the more complex parts such as the gear box, shocks and body shell already completed in the factory though, keeping the time from box to bash to the bear minimum. All you have to do is assemble the rest of the parts, add the radio, battery and charger of your choice and you’ll be up and running in just a couple of hours. Doing it this way though your learning much more about how the vehicle works.

The Wild One is back for 2012 as model number 58525. This distinctive looking off-road buggy originally hit the shelves back in 1985 and has become a real classic. This year we see the return of the wild one to the Tamiya range. Available in kit form, the Wild One features a 2 wheel drive configuration with gear based differential. Suspension is fully independent double wishbone giving excellent performance over rough terrain, with aluminium oil filled dampers soaking up the bumps and pot-holes.

Schumacher are never ones to rest on their laurels. They’re back in 2012 with the new Cougar SV2, a revised, updated and improved version of the Cougar SV, winner of the BRCA 1:10 Off-Road National Championships. The SV2 sits much lower then its predecessor and its sleeker lines and hard anodised, laser-etched chassis is now 8mm longer than the SV too. Heavy duty race spec differential, uprated bearings and tougher driveshafts have also been shoehorned into this rather capable off road racer.
